IN MEMORY OF JOSIE: MOST GOLDEN OF HAPPY ENDINGS

Last February, literally days before the Pandemic hammer fell, I went on a cruise as a guest for the first time in my life. I had the pleasure of having an awesome conversation about art in a Royal Caribbean piano bar with Lisa Swisher. Lisa is currently a detective. Lisa is also a wonderful artist in her off time and will be retiring next year. I am excited about all the possibilities her future will hold artistically. SUCH a nice lady who deserves every good thing life can give. Lisa asked me to paint a likeness of her late dog, Josie. Josie had a rough start in life. His finish, however, was of the most golden of happy endings with the Swisher family. I asked Lisa to tell me how Josie found his way to her and her husband Dan.

LISA’S WORDS: I was on my way home one afternoon when I noticed a beautiful Border Collie mix dog sitting alongside the road about ½ mile from my house with a pile of dog food in front of him. I stopped to try and get close but he ran into the woods. The following morning I again saw him sitting in the exact same spot, I assumed he was waiting for his owners to return for him. Again, I tried to approach him but he went into the woods. The following evening my husband Dan and I were on our way home from dinner and there he was in the exact same spot. We stopped the car and I told Dan to go on home and I would stay until I could get him to trust me. It took a little while but he finally came to me and I was able to rub him on the head. He immediately perked up, started wagging his tail and seemed happy. Josie followed me down the road by my side all the way home. Josie made right up to Dan and became his best friend. No matter where Dan was on the farm, you could be sure Josie was with him, most likely guarding the cows or horses, always working to impress Dan. Josie was with us for the next 9-10 years and was the most unusual and loyal dog I have ever known. Unfortunately Josie passed away from liver cancer a few months ago.

MY TWO CENTS WORTH: The fact that Josie sat in that same spot, wouldn’t come to someone he didn’t know and waited days for whoever it was that left him there, shows a level of commitment that most HUMANS won’t even make. Loyalty to the degree of sitting alone all night in the darkness thinking the person you knew was coming back after you. Listening for the sound of their car and straining to find their scent. Likely confused over why he was left in this situation. This pup was only going on what he knew of life before finally surrendering to that walk down the lane to “home at last” with Lisa and Dan. I don’t know a soul who doesn’t feel a little like Josie did right now. Wondering why we ended up here. Dying for the familiar to come again and wondering if it ever will. Josie showed big faith when he finally decided that there might be a different road for him beyond the only life he knew. In this case, the best was yet to come. Be like Josie. Have big faith. A heart felt thanks to Dan and Lisa Swisher for the love you gave this dog until his last breath. How wonderful you are for doing that! Bless you.

As a kid, I admittedly wasn’t paying as much attention to history and political science as I should have been. I only cared about music. I heard it in my head, I wrote it, I was constantly figuring it out and I was consumed with the giant puzzle of what went into a song. I listened to my faves on the radio and quickly devoured any new releases hot off the press. It was an obsession that would eventually segue into art.

But even the creative dreamers should make themselves aware of what is going on around them. I recently took in a documentary on Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. I have since begun to pay a lot more attention to what women have and have not had the right to do. I am still astonished that some of our rights have not been available to us for all that long. Also, it’s hard to imagine that we would ever have had to fight for them.

While, you can almost never see eye to eye with anyone on everything.... you can certainly recognize the noble pulse of their fight and why/how it may contribute collectively to our nation. It’s not about dying to be right.... it’s about reaching for a solution. Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said, "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn't be that women are the exception." She was a warrior for women and fought tirelessly for us. There was a time a gal like me would have had no rights or allies. She made that better. She made a lot of things better.

While looking for a way to honor her, I was obsessed with the fierce beauty of this particular pose...Had. To. Paint. Couldn’t stop myself!! I hope you enjoy my tribute to “The Notorious RBG”... just as much as I did creating it! This painting of RBG is “a wrap”. It is an 8 x 10 watercolor on canvas panel.

THE STORY: Well over a year ago, a nice lady named Gayle contacted me about painting a picture of her dog, Duval, for a surprise anniversary present for her husband Marc. Here’s the thing. I was petrified of painting dogs. I had never painted one before. And by that I mean yes I really had but it was NOT something that was ever going to see the light of day. Sounds stupid to say I was petrified to do a a painting because there are, of course, many things that are worth being petrified over that are far more serious than doing a dog painting. Nevertheless, I wanted to do it right.

Doing this piece was very important to me. Duval is a bit of a celebrity over on North Bank. People KNOW him and the need to please was paramount. Gayle had enough faith in my ability to trust me with this project as a precious gift to her husband. I, for sure, did NOT want to screw up. I said yes, had a couple of pics to work with and commenced in creating this anniversary present. I also needed to practice serious discretion. Clients who are giving my paintings as gifts need for me to keep a secret even when the work is done and especially before the gift has been given. I secretly delivered the painting to Gayle, then waited and wondered if Marc would like it.

You may have seen me post some pics a couple of weeks back of this beautiful pup named Duval. He is an English Lab, which once again, is a breed I was not familiar with. SO CHILL. My gig life and artist life come together sometimes and I FINALLY got to meet Duval and his dog dad, Marc! Gayle and Marc had come to the Boatyard during one of my gigs and brought their beloved pet with them. YAY. I don’t get to meet my “subjects” very often, if ever. During our visit at my gig, Marc spoke of the painting and said I “nailed it”. Music to my ears on every level. Meanwhile, Gayle did a little impromptu photoshoot. She worked hard to get Duval to look up. Said the key words. Treat, treat, treat. She got a few good shots. However, I’m posting my favorite shot. Me nose to nose with sweet Duval. A magnificent animal who is clearly living a wonderful life with loving people surrounded by other admirers in the neighborhood. He’s a little rock star.

THE LESSON: Sometimes fear works in your favor. Doing something you don’t believe you can do. Doing something you NEVER said you’d do. Saying yes when you’re thinking “NO WAY”. And sometimes, free falling off the high dive and giving it a try is a good idea. Things are complicated right now for everyone I know. So many of us are forced to make changes that we weren’t expecting to have to make. I have a couple of very inspiring friends who admirably raise hundreds of butterflies across the country. Today my friend Patti Mumford posted that one of her Monarchs fell when hatching and his wings were a little wrinkled. Man, I have SO felt that when I’m trying something new. Wrinkled wings! Patti named this butterfly Confucius and ended her post with this quote: Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart”. Thank you Patti. Thank you Marc and Gayle. And special thanks to little Duval. I had never heard of Sidney’s breed, so I did little research in order to educate myself. I looked at some pictures and widened my horizons as far as doggies go. Every time I turn around, I hear about a new bread and am amazed by it. Rita and Gary spend their summers at Buckeye Lake and the rest of the time in Florida. Sidney is their sidekick and from the picture they provided, looks like a natural to me.

RITA’S STORY OF HOW SIDNEY CAME INTO THEIR LIVES: Sidney is an eleven year old Coton de Tulear. He was born in Pinehurst NC. Gary and I had never heard of the breed. Gary used to buy all his business suits from Godfrey’s. One day while at the Polaris store, we met Dolce their Coton. We fell in love, so the search for Sidney began. I can’t remember how we found our breeder. Old age. LOL. But, we did, and emailed her in NC. It was quite a process as she required us to fill out a questionnaire and interview. We were allowed to request the sex. Then we waited. The breeder sent us pics and videos of all the puppies in the litter. We did not tell her, but we were hoping for the male she called “Louis”. We were matched with him. We were very excited. Quite a process. Sid spends his summers at Buckeye Lake and winters in Naples. Of course he loves his toys. Most come from the claw machine. (Inside joke if you know Rita;) He is extremely social with people but has been known to stand up to other dogs. Size doesn’t matter. He only weighs 10 pounds and is quite the barker at times. He loves long walks and will sneak out the door to explore on his own. Gary bought him for me, but, he is most definitely Gary’s dog.

IN CONCLUSION: It’s funny how one thing leads to another without us knowing it sometimes. Gary had gone to Godfreys to buy suits for work. The pursuit of one thing fostered a completely different thing. That road led to seeing a little creature that Rita and Gary decided they HAD to pursue. Next up, a very discerning breeder who clearly made sure that nothing but the best would be the future home for her pups. Almost as suspenseful as any adoption process, Rita and Gary wanted this little pup badly enough to jump through all the required hoops. And, as good things come to those who wait, the “right one” did finally come along. I’m 100% sure Sidney hit the dog lottery. I love the pic of this pup on the back of their boat basking in what Rita and Gary do in the summers at Buckeye Lake. I am also comforted to hear a GOOD breeder story that took strong responsibility for her animals and their ultimate care. This painting is an 8x10 watercolor on canvas.
I guess I’ve been around here for awhile. So Sara Dernberger and I have many people, places and things in common. Mostly, I have seen her smiling face at some of my gigs and she is good friends with so many people that I know. Particularly Leslie Campbell, mom of Chloe, that I painted last. Sara had a Jack Russell Terrier named Jack who has passed over the rainbow bridge. She wanted me to paint him because she holds his memory so dear.

JACK AND SARA’S LOVE STORY: IN HER WORDS I walked into a room of pens with rescued pups and he stopped playing with sibs and made eye contact with me from across the room. The perfect first paragraph of a love story. He could be a pistol and a protector. JRT's are defensive, so I had to work with him to let him know it was okay to be cuddly once in a while. Loved to give the dog next door a run along the fence. She would actually stare at my house and wait for him to come out and play. He had my heart and I shed tears frequently. Lots of great memories.

IN CONCLUSION: IN MY WORDS SPECS: 8X10 Watercolor on canvas panel. What a delight it was to paint this memorable animal. The stance and attitude came right through the moment in time on the picture I was working from. Muscular looking little guy. Sara’s story speaks of love at first sight. A centrifugal force. The definition of that being an apparent force that acts outward on a body moving around a center, arising from the body’s inertia. That’s a mouthful. Short version, yeah, sounds like love at first sight to me. Yes, there is such thing and when you know it, you know it. That moment when a person, place or thing becomes the center of your universe and everything else whites out. A moment usually never forgotten. Jack and Sara. It was meant to be. Fly high little one. Your mission of love has been accomplished.

Her uncle was married to my cousin. Pretty sure we shared some of the same classes in Hebron Elementary and perhaps some Brownie and Girl Scout activities. Fast forward we reconnected at one of my gigs at the Pizza Cottage. She’d seen my paintings and spoken of having one done of her late dog, Chloe. CHLOE’S LIFE STORY IN LESLIE’S WORDS: From the moment we got Chloe she was the perfect addition to our family. She was very loving to all of us but especially to her "dad". He took her for car rides, trips to get "pup cups" and a swim in Buckeye Lake. Oh how she loved to swim. I have pictures of her floating on a raft in my brother's pool. Our son had a Springer Spaniel (Sadie) and she lived two houses down from us. Chloe would take her toys outside and line them up on the hill to entice Sadie to come play.Chloe knew she could not leave her yard. She also loved presents. We would buy her new toys and wrap them up so she could open them. But she loved her family the most! We had her for 16 years and I think of her often. She was the best! CONCLUSION: IN MY OWN WORDS Leslie provided me with some great hard copy pictures of Chloe. She wanted an 8 x 10 and this was done with watercolor on a canvas panel. Though I had never had the pleasure of meeting Chloe as she’d already passed over the Rainbow Bridge, her sweetness radiated in every pic that Leslie gave me. My favorite part of Leslie’s story is the part about Chloe lining her toys up on the hill to lure her canine neighbor Sadie to come play. She knew she was supposed to stay put, but she craved the love and company of one of her friends. That part of the story choked me up. A lot of us feel the same way right now. Two legged or four legged, we all crave love. So line your toys up on the hill. Someday we will be able to play together again without a care in the world. Until then, take a tip from Chloe. Love unconditionally from where you are in any way you can. I knew nothing of this place or the scene even though it is in my own state. It is a winter scene. Since I usually lean towards the sun and sunny pictures, it was quite a stretch for me.

I looked up a brief explanation of this landmark in our Buckeye State: The 147 acre Edgewater Park is the westernmost park in Cleveland Metroparks Lakefront Reservation. Edgewater Park features 9000 feet of shoreline, dog and swim beaches, boat ramps, fishing pier, picnic areas and grills and a rentable pavilion.

Since painting this scene, I have learned it is that backdrop for many a happy occasion. Weddings, outings, picnics, gatherings, boating, fishing and all out happy social events. Just like the ones we are missing so much right now. I have had friends tell me they were photographed there, collected beach glass there and have made great memories there.

As for the painting itself, I have only a cell phone shot to offer. Surely falls short of the fantastic high resolution scans that I get from my friend Mike at Photographic Creations. I look forward to coming back to his services again. The actual painting is 12 x 12 watercolor on canvas panel with just a touch of black ink.

The sky in the original photo is electric. Lots of pinks and blues with what looks like an ominous snow storm moving in. Frightening and beautiful. My favorite part of doing this painting was the big tree. Dormant, yet strong and firmly planted. Striking even though frozen. Awaiting for rebirth and renaissance. Just like us. Please stay strong, firmly planted. and look forward to rebirth and renaissance. Nothing is easy right now. Keep the faith.
The Buckeye Lake Region Chamber of Commerce Winterfest Art Show has graced me with meeting a lot of cool new people. This past January, before the world screeched to a halt, was no exception. On January 25th, 2020 I met Stephanie Fritz. She bought a print from me that I had sold out of. We exchanged information to arrange for a pick-up after the show. Stephanie later came to my gallery to get her print. While there, she handed me a snap shot of 3 people who were together on a trip to Key West. The three people were Stephanie, her husband and her sister-in-law, Cindy. She asked me to paint a likeness of the picture.

BACKSTORY OF COMMISSION: CINDY FRITZ:

When Stephanie commissioned this painting of herself, her husband and her sister-in-law, Cindy, she explained that Cindy (sister-in-law) had been killed. I was unaware at the time that this tragedy was actually in the news a little over a year ago. After hearing the story, I remembered seeing the news piece on TV. Cindy had gone to the Diley Road Medical Center in Pickerington, Ohio for non-life threatening reasons. While waiting for treatment, someone slammed their car into the medical center waiting area. One hospital employee was killed and Cindy passed a few days later. As they say, in the blink of an eye, this precious lady was gone. Stephanie had sent me a link to the news report. Her friends and family testify that Cindy was a beautiful human. She was described as woman FULL of compassion, generosity and the ability to unite people even beyond her passing. Stephanie says of the snap shot that the people in it were here two favorite people in the world and it was a happy time spent in Key West. She loves and misses Cindy deeply. CONCLUSION:

IN MY OWN WORDS When invited to do this work, I was apprehensive. I knew this snapshot was so much more than just a vacation picture. It was a very shining moment in time. A way that Stephanie wanted to remember her beloved Cindy. Commissions, a little like tattoos, have reasons for coming into being. A person wants to hold on to something so dear to them. Commemorate a person, place or thing that made a difference in their lives. It may be a landmark of surviving something, it may be a glimpse of how life was better for them because of the subject matter or it may be just as I said above. A sweet moment in time. Though one person from this picture is gone, this is Stephanie’s way of putting them back “Together Again”. Rest in Peace Cindy Fritz. I never had the pleasure of meeting you, but am nevertheless blessed by even getting to hear about your “shine”. May your legacy live on through everyone you touched.

I came to know and be very fond of many Nurses, STNA’s, Administrators and Social Workers. I was am so lucky to say I made some life long friends during that period of my life. I salute all of them today. They are doing uber brave things on the front line and i pray for their safety. One of the social workers I crossed paths with was Ellen Drewes. Ellen had an extensive hospice background and brought with her, Brinkli. I watched Brinkli swagger down the halls of the care facility and work as a therapy dog along side Ellen when she counseled patients through tough times and frequently even end of life. Brinkli was and still is, a natural.

BACKSTORY OF COMMISSION: ELLEN’S WORDS: I got Brinkli when she was 5 weeks old from a breeder in Chillicothe. At a week old the breeder put a B for Brinkli on her belly. By the time I picked her up she knew her name. She is named after the dog in the movie “You’ve Got Mail”, which is my favorite movie. I always knew I wanted her to be a therapy dog but she had to want that as well!! She was trained by Erica Nonnemann at National K9 in Columbus and she absolutely wanted to be a Therapy dog true to her golden nature. Her specialty is hospice patients and visiting the terminally ill. She grew up at the Pickering House and Fairhope Hospice. Denise Bauer , their CEO, actually suggested I get a therapy dog when I was working for them after the death of my husband David. After leaving there, she loved visiting patents at several care and rehab facilities over the years and being part of their lives. I am now back at hospice but with COVID 19, Brinkli is on a no visiting order from her organization. Brinkli brings joy where there is sadness and is a ray of sunshine to every one she meets. There are tons of people involved in our success. Too many to mention by name but two that I have to. Our vets, who has kept her going and well. Drs. Jennifer Schoenfeld and Heather Cormany. Without great vets you can’t keep a great dog going. She also has been a volunteer at our hospital, FMC, Buckeye Care (previously Homestead), Carriage Court, and several other facilities in Lancaster. Quite a career for a pup!!!!

CONCLUSION: IN MY OWN WORDS Brinkli is one of the only dogs I have painted that I have personally met and interacted with. She used to come up and kinda lean on my leg in the office as if to say “just wanna let you know I’m here”. Brinkli came to Ellen at a time of grief in her life. They formed a team. It came naturally. Good teams do. It’s hard to say who saves who sometimes. During these days of confinement, like Brinkli assuring you she’s got your back, you may want to call somebody this week and say “just wanna let you know I’m here”. That’s good team work. Sometimes that’s all it takes. Stay safe. Stay home. If you would like to read past blogs, please go to www.smithgirlarts.com. If you are interested in a commissioned piece of prints of another work of mine, PM me. Thanks. g #smithgirlarts #brinklitherapydog #socialworkers #nurses #stnas #nursingandrehab #hospice

I really hadn’t met Celeste Piccinini when the commission for her dog had been placed. Her brother-in-law, DD, sent me a message asking that I do the painting for his brother, Rick and Celeste for Christmas. He sent me some very expressive pictures. It was surely enough to go on. I got the painting done in time for the holiday but didn’t even know the dog’s name yet so I entitled the painting “You Needed Me” mostly based on what DD had told me about the dog and the fact that I often use musical references for titles. I finally met Celeste later in January at a McGuffey Lane concert. She then friended me on Facebook and graciously filled in all the blanks about Memo, her dog. A story I was so glad to read. She owns and operates the Celeste Galerie (Fine Art Picture Framing).

“MEMO”: BACKSTORY OF THE COMMISSION Celeste’s Words:

Memo came from the Humane Society. It was my husband’s turn to pick out a new dog after our last one had passed away. When I was in Florida visiting family, my husband Rick decided he was going to look at dogs. At the Humane Society this one caught his eye. He was full of excitement when ever anyone got close to his cage. Barking and carrying on. After asking to see him and playing with him for bout half hour, he said I’ll take “Willy” (his name). They told him that another family had him on hold. Needless to say, my husband was bummed, disappointed and left. On his way home, the humane society called and said the other family passed on him. They said you can come get him tomorrow. He said no I will come back out NOW. I don’t want him to spend another night in jail! Rick did not tell me he got a dog till I got home and saw a sign on the door that said (Beware Pitt Bull). I was like, OH NO! We never talked about getting a Pit! Upon my entering the house, this crazy puppy was so rambunctious! Cute as could be! They said he was a Lab and Airedale. We did a DNA of him and they said he was Lab, King Charles and still one part unknown. He has to have some type of terrier cause his hair is wiry and he use to have more of a beard. Memo is short for Guglielmo, William in Italian. Rick had already picked out two names and one was Memo (pronounced like, memo pad). He was a wild and ornery puppy! This dog was trying so hard to be the ALPHA dog, but after several moths he gave in to Rick. Memo goes to work with me everyday at the Galerie. He gets out of the truck every morning, runs down to Roccos Salon. He sits at the door till they let him and gets his Special treats then comes back. All the clients know him, he’s been going down there for 6 years. He will go down several times a day if I let him. He is the mascot in our little strip mall. Sometimes they come and get him because the clients want to see him.He has his bed under my front design table and he can watch out the window to see who’s coming and going. He knows some clients cars and gets all excited when he sees them coming. Memos first trick was, High Five. His command to use the bathroom is “GoBlue”. Lately he’s been on a steroid that’s made him hairier/fluffy. People have asked me if it’s the same dog.

Gayla’s Addition to the Story: Since the composition of this story, Celeste has posted adorable pictures of Memo still trying to live his normal routine by going to Roccos Salon every morning to get his expected treat when they arrive for work. He waits outside the door, but due to the Pandemic, the Salon is closed. He still waits outside the door probably thinking they are just late for work. I I take note that in his mind, if he just waits, eventually things will work out for him. Melts my heart.

CONCLUSION: IN MY OWN WORDS Without knowing a thing about this particular pup, again, the pictures said so much. Celeste speaks of the adjustment period after adopting Memo. So often we hear of dog/pet adoptions being “returned” in a matter of weeks because they are too “difficult”. It makes me think. They don’t know you, they don’t know how to please you, they just want to understand and I’m doubly sure they want your relationship to work out even MORE than you do. Nobody really knows what went on in their little lives before their adoption. In most cases, I would guess it would almost be best if we DIDN’T know. If you take a new job, get a new partner, or meet a new circle of friends, you may easily click in the beginning but there will ALWAYS be some sort of adjustment period if those relationships are in for the long run. I don’t believe it is any different in the case of the adoption of an animal. In the story above, the Piccininis took the time and patience to let Memo adjust. I thank them profusely for doing it right. Because of that, Memo gives joy to everyone he meets in his strip mall retail world and at home every day. The payoff is so sweet. The moral of the story is more than obvious. Learn each other’s language. React and correct lovingly. Show patience. Stand your ground if you have to, but for heaven’s sake be committed and strive to bring out the best if you want a richer life. I promise to reread my own words several times going forward. Yet another lesson from the innocence of an animal.

A very nice lady named Melinda contacted me about an original painting of her dog. I met Melinda through a group of my very good friends one night at the Buckeye Lake Brewery. In non-pandemic mode the Buckeye Lake Brewery and adjoining Chef Shack serve as a social pulse in the heart of the Village of Buckeye Lake. Melinda and I hit it off immediately and on down the road I performed for her daughter's graduation party at the Boat Yard. Nice family that I have had the honor of bringing music AND art to during special occasions.

Melinda sent me a message after seeing some of my work and asked if I would do my version of her Miniature Schnauzer, Rusty. Per usual, I asked for as many pictures as she could send me. I am, of course, always on the lookout for the one who speaks up when I look at it. I was a few months from getting to this painting due to other orders, so I took the pictures of Rusty and put them on my wall by my paint brushes. It was a good way to take mental pictures of him while I was working on other commissions.

RUSTY: BACKSTORY OF COMMISSION

I asked Melinda to tell me the story behind Rusty. There is always a very personal story behind a beloved pet and I really like to hear how they first met, where they came from and what they have meant to their owner through the ups and downs of life. In Melinda's own words, Rusty's story reads like this:

Rusty came to me 14 years ago at 5 weeks of age. My oldest daughter dropped by to “pay” her auto insurance as she was a young adult and remained on mom’s policy. She gave me this lame story that this was her payment and handed this puppy to her 4 year old brother, Dalton!! How could I send him back?!lol it was love at first site for my son. Over the years, Rusty had enjoyed traveling with me and Dalton in the car for “special” trips. Great companion for both me and Dalton over the years thru our life adventures.

CONCLUSION: IN MY OWN WORDS

There are lots of ways a pet transaction can take place when coming into a new home. I'm not sure I've ever heard of a "puppy payment" on car insurance, but clearly Melinda's daughter was pretty confident that little Rusty would be irresistible from the moment Melinda laid eyes on him. I'm also guessing that day the car insurance was considered "paid in fullest".

You will see a few pics of Rusty that Melinda sent me in this post. But, as always, the one I chose is the one where Rusty is looking at whoever is taking picture like they are the only person in the world. Likely because they ARE his world. One of the most treasured things about a good pet is the way they are always in the moment. They give you their undivided attention. It is quality time for them. Forever teaching us they way we should be. In the moment and fully focused on the people that we are talking to. It's really that simple, isn't it?

DAUBENMIRES AND HOW I KNEW THEM: My first family home was in Hebron, Ohio. We lived two doors down from the Daubenmire family. Pearl and Frank Daubenmire had five kids who constantly delivered miles of fun and entertainment within our childhood neighborhood. My little brother spent so many summer days adventuring with Bill Daubenmire, their youngest son. We lived our own version of the “Wonder Years”. Time went by. Everybody grew up. Everybody scattered.

DAUBENMIRE REUNION: A couple of years ago, much to my delighted surprise, I saw Bill Daubenmire standing in the yard next door to me on West Bank. He told me that he and his wife, Brenda, were renting the house next door to me while they built a home near Dawes Woods. WOW. Full Circle. Bill was my neighbor again! I LOVED having grown up Bill living next door as much as I loved having childhood Bill living next door back in the day. Really cool bonus, I got to meet and know Bill’s wife, Brenda. We had great talks and shared a love of the green thumb. The house they were renting was the former house of my beloved neighbor Pat Dodson. Also, grand queen of green thumbery. I felt like she had sent me some new and familiar friends. Bill and Brenda have since moved to their dream home. I miss them every day.

THE ASSIGNMENT: One day Brenda messaged me and said that she wanted me to do a painting of all the family Yorkies. Sonny, Shorty, Leo and Alfie. All these pups are distributed amongst Bill, Brenda and their daughters. I asked her for pics and over the next few weeks she collected a series of pics from all over the place. By all over the place I mean one was even taken on a subway in New York City when Brenda was on her way to Italy! When she first sent them, I had a terrible time figuring out which pup was who. By the end of the painting, I was an expert.

TRAGIC SNAG: SOoooo, after getting the pics, laying them out and making a game plan, I was ready to start. Sadly, at the same time I was ready to commence, Brenda sent me a message and said to hold off. Sonny (one of the 4) had vanished into thin air. Bill and Brenda now live by a heavily wooded area. She said Sonny was out in the yard and suddenly Sonny was gone. Suffice to say, the family was devastated. I was too. The thought of that tiny little being out there alone close to coyotes, eagles and potentially evil humans was heartbreaking to me. It was also quite cold at that time. Sonny isn’t fat enough to stay warm! I was sick for them.

CHILD LIKE FAITH: I’ve gotten rusty at child like faith. You don’t necessarily think a simple prayer about a little pup will get answered because you (as an adult) fear the worst. You figure God is busy enough dealing with one constant catastrophe after another. How could HE possibly be bothered. I remember thinking…what can I do for them? I felt helpless. I did a lot of shares on Face Book. I answered people’s comments who were asking for more details. Short of that, I was not sure what else to do. So….I took Sonny’s little picture and laid it on my desk. Everyday I put my hand on it and reacquainted myself with child like faith. The kind you would put into action if you WERE a child and lost your beloved pet. I remember praying that I knew it was a big time long shot, but could we please get this little doggie home safely. Protect this creature of innocence. It’s was almost Christmas for heaven’s sake. We really did need a Christmas miracle. Admittedly, even with the prayers, chances were slim.

MIRACLES DO COME ALONG SOMETIMES: Approximately a week later, I got a message from Brenda. “You’d better get paintin’ girl!” Through the exposure of numerous Facebook shares amongst their many, many friends, someone had spotted Sonny and Sonny did INDEED come home. Little tiny Sonny had miraculously survived several days out in the cold, the elements, and potential predators. Unbelievable. Brenda and Bill came by my little gallery prior to Christmas to retrieve the painting and a print for each of their daughters just in time for the holiday. They, as always, filled my ears with words of encouragement. Bill and Brenda are always so good at that. It was so awesome to see them again and share in a happy ending. PROJECT SUMMARY: “When Sonny Came Home” is an 11 x 14 watercolor painting on a canvas panel. Finding the personalities of each subject in the photos provided is still the strongest guiding force for me. Sounds crazy, but each one of them seems to be saying something. All God’s creatures have a place in the choir. Some sing low, some sing higher. Those lyrics apply here. I will never forget this project and when I pass by the print of of it that is in my home, I am reminded of the reintroduction of child like faith into my life. After all. It never hurts to ask, does it?

CHRISTMAS PRESENT COMMISSIONS DECEMBER 2019

Gayla Smith/Smith Girl Arts

Happy pet stories warm my heart. We all know there is a dark side to the fate of some of these innocent souls, so I love to get a story that ends in "happy tails".

Such is the story of Phoebe and Mozzie, two pugs who found their way into an extremely loving home and two pugs who won the "dog lottery".

My dear friend, Jamie Whetstone Wells, was still living in Texas prior to Christmas 2019. Jamie and I have had a friendship made of diamonds and memories that will always be with me. We have shared music,
Red Wench gigs, life and stolen moments. Jamie asked me to do a painting of each of her pugs for her husband, Wil. for Christmas. It was CRUCIAL that I pleased the Wells family!

She sent me a LOT of pictures full of expressions and faces with stories to tell. Lots of pictures help me to capture the spirit of the animal and what they may be saying to us with their sweet gazes into the camera. Also, having many pictures in certain lighting assists me in color choices that more accurately authenticate the animal's "look".

Mozzie was the most difficult. Mozzie is very black in color and in most shots either looks forlorn or absolutely clownish. I always look for that ONE shot that tells me what I need to know to paint the picture. One of the shots had Mozzie on a polka dotted blanket ( I love polka dots ) looking so submissively at whomever was taking the shot. It helped to use some grays and whites to make defining cuves in Mozzie's body. It was a learning challenge to capture the necessary definition and melting expression.

The shot I chose to work from for Phoebe had what I viewed as an "oh crap, why in the world am I in this giant flower pot?" look. The expression was that of temporary worry, yet priceless, as she was standing in this colorful pot showing off her "beige tan". I loved doing the colors in the pot and surrounding the pup with blue to pop out her very neutral coat.

Jamie has since moved with her husband and pugs back into the heart of the Buckeye state landing a great job and a brand new life on our home turf. I know her family is overjoyed about this. "I second that emotion". Friends for life. Partners in crime. More memories to make.

Thank you for the commissions, Jamie. I was so happy to hear that Wil loved the work when he received the paintings for Christmas. YAY.

Phoebe and Mozzie landed in heaven when they met the Wells family.

Back story per Jamie on each pug is below.

MOZZIE

Jamie and Will had been together for about 5 years, and had been talking about getting a dog, but they wanted to make sure they were truly ready for the commitment. That spring, Jamie's family dog (Pugsley) passed away, which led Jamie's sister (Johanna) to start the search for a new companion in the shape of another pug. Johanna found a woman in Kentucky who happened to have two pug puppies who were bonded — a girl and a boy — and reached out to her. Before Jamie and Will knew it, they had been talked into getting one of the puppies and were buying all the dog paraphernalia you can think of. Enter Mozzie. Mozzie is a goofy little snort factory with an underbite that will make you smile every time. He has more personality than any dog Jamie and Will have ever known and loves his humans. Mozzie makes more pig and gremlin noises than dog, and he is often a sassy little princess. He is spoiled rotten and treated like a human child.

PHOEBE

Jamie and Will had had Mozzie (black pug) for almost a year when they decided he needed a buddy, especially for when they had to leave the house for hours at a time. They had recently moved to South Padre Island, TX, and because of Jamie's work with the local animal shelter she was connected with a pug rescue based out of Houston. That's where they found Phoebe. Phoebe was rescued from a backyard breeder who no longer wanted her when she gave birth to still born puppies. Phoebe was skinny, timid and didn't know what toys or real affection were. Mozzie wasn't too sure about sharing his kingdom with Phoebe at first, but they quickly became best buddies. Jamie and Will were able to fatten Phoebe up pretty quick, and now she has all the toys (she LOVES hedgehogs), chewies, and belly rubs she could ever want. Her personality has continued to unfold over the past few years as she's settled into her new family, which has been a wonderful journey for Jamie and Will to witness.

I still have several I will be posting weekly. Today’s blog is about Truman the beagle. Truman was the pup of Joe and Patty Thomas. I have known the Thomas’s for a very long time and had the pleasure of having one of their daughters for voice lessons when she was in high school. They are a beautiful and loving family.

Joe and Patty’s daughter, Courtney, contacted me before Christmas about painting a picture of their dog Truman for Christmas. I learned that Truman was truly the love of their life. He has since gone over what all pet lovers refer to as the Rainbow Bridge. I was touched and honored to be ask to do this painting for them.

I first asked Courtney to give me a little verbal snap shot of what Truman was like and a bit of his story. These are her words.

“Truman a miniature beagle or what Joe and Patty Thomas thought was a miniature beagle won the heart of every person that met him. Truly a beagle when he was a pup he was wild and silly. Constantly up for a chase. As he grew older his sweet demeanor and loving soul was always evident. Anytime Truman met someone his tail was wagging and he loved to get treats. He would come barreling through the room just for a snack. He gave his family endless love and plenty of snoring. He will always be remembered for the sweet, gentle and loving dog that brought such joy to our family.”

After receiving this story, Courtney’s mom, Patty, wrote me a very sweet note about the painting. I was overjoyed to know that she loves and treasures it so much. Her story of going to get Truman was amusing. So many people are led to believe they are buying a “pocket pup” only to learn they weigh over 50 lbs when they are full grown.

From Patty:

"Gayla, I love the picture of my beloved Truman that you painted. It is beautiful and captures his spirit. I will cherish it forever.

Yes, it is a funny story. I had never had a dog before and decided I wanted a little pocket beagle. (They usually weigh around 8lbs) When I found Truman and brought him home Joe looked at his paws and told me wasn’t going to weigh 8lbs. Needless to say 55lbs later he was right! But oh how we loved him!"

Thank you, Courtney, for having the faith in me to commemorate Truman. Clearly he brought a lot of joy to your family. And Truman, my prayer is that you are living your best dog's life over the bridge. "You'll Be In My Heart" just seemed like the right title because of the loving paw prints he left in the hearts of his family.

Because I was trying make the Christmas deadline, I didn’t get a chance to get the painting professionally scanned for my files so bear with me. These are only cell phone pics. I’m making some collages of my four pawed subject matter.

Process begins with pics sent by the client. After staring at them for awhile, there is always one that speaks to me. The other pics help with color and expressions. This guy has a super sweet face and the pic I chose to paint of him hit me immediately. Some of the pets come with little back stories and undoubtedly bundles of love and comfort to their owners. I’ll be posting more as I do them as the gifts have been given by now.

Entitled “You Needed Me” because, in my eyes, that’s what his face is saying to his masters. I believe him.

So the pet commissions resulted in a very fun and unexpected detour for me. I’m still making them and still taking them.

If you are interested in a commission, kindly
PM me for pricing and policies.

He said they had (in his words) a crazy hair-brained idea and they wanted to know if I’d agree to be a part of it. The Explore Licking County Team, if you haven’t met them, is a genius power team that cooks up very cool experiences designed to promote tourism for Greater Licking County. Their efforts lead to putting this neck of the woods on the map in Ohio, hence stimulating economic growth and jobs. Talking with them always just “feels like home” to me.

Drowning in curiosity, I agreed to take the conference call. They proceeded to pitch what they referred to as their crazy idea. The concept they were then working on was for The Ohio Tourism Expo Day, May 8th, 2019, which was to be held on the Ohio Statehouse lawn. They asked if I could paint a specific side of the Statehouse and act as a “live artist” during the Expo. What occurred to me at the time was that the crazy part of the idea was not the idea itself, but that they thought it was ME that could do it :)

There is something about the ELC team that I would admittedly jump off a cliff for if they asked me to. I just trust their instincts that much. I was intimidated by painting a government building. Ya’ll know me for painting, fishies, mermaids, kitties, suns and you know, stuff that just can’t be real. They insisted that they completely wanted me to do this with my own spin on it. They emailed me some pics, and requested that I work on representing the west side of the building. And so it began.

The Ohio Tourism Expo Day 2019 came and went. Of all the crappy, rainy days we have in Ohio, somehow, by some miracle, May 8th, 2019 was a picture perfect day. I spent the day in a very inviting ELC booth with Dan, Carol, Garrett and Alex. Great company and really fun to do live art.

Upon conception of this idea, Dan Moder also explained to me that after the Expo they were going to inquire, through their network of associates, about having this painting given to Govern Mike DeWine as a gift from Licking County. I remember thinking….. WHAT a cool idea. I also remember thinking….. could that REALLY happen?

On July 17th, 2019 at 2PM my painting, inspired by the ELC team, “The Statehouse”, was indeed gifted to Governor Mike DeWine at the Governors Residence in Bexley, Ohio. Dan, Carol, Garrett, Alex, Mike Fornataro and myself were invited into the Governor’s dining room to sit with him and his assistants. Upon arrival, his people escorted us towards the front entrance and there he was. Huge smile, hand outstretched to meet us right on the front steps. He couldn’t have been more welcoming and gracious. Since my mind was sufficiently blown over it all, I’m not even sure how long we were even there. I’d say better part of 45 min. Dan, Mike and Carol discussed the happenings and tourism growth opportunities of Licking County with Governor DeWine and invited him to some of the cool things happening there. He said he loved the colors in my painting and pointed out the sun. I explained to him that since we were almost always struggling to get sun in Ohio, I felt it was helpful to just put one in almost every painting I do. We proceeded to photo ops under the expert direction of Garrett, the ELC official photographer, and said our good byes.

This was not my first time in the Governor's Residence. During the Celeste administration, I provided musical entertainment for seven years of his 8 years in office. It was a double blessing to be invited back for a different art form.

Visit over, Gayla giddy.

Thank you, Carol Tress, for introducing me to your beautiful co-workers. Thank you Carol, Dan, Garret, Alex and Mike for spending this once in a lifetime, unforgettable day with me. I am a better person and a better artist for having been invited into your orbit. You guys are just flat out too cool for school.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

Buckeye Lake has so many beautiful pockets of community all the way around the pond. South shore folk, West Bank Folk, Liebs Island Folk, Harbor Hillers, Heron Bayers, Crane Lake Folk, North Bankers etc. They all believe their little pocket is the best place on the lake and they are ALL so right. They all have a close knit group of friends and I love to see the strength and comfort of their relationships. I watch them collectively raise a glass & dine together living life to the max. It gives me joy.

The DAM project challenged these lake folk. It challenged the residents and the workers. Not the end of the world, but it made some very happy people quite sad. Receding shorelines, not much boat traffic, not quite as much fun under the sun. 24 hour chaos. Not life threatening, just sad. Hearts were a little bit heavy. But, as I knew they would, they soldiered through it. Some of the challenges continue, but I know from what I witnessed last night at our official summer opening gig round the lake, they are rejoicing. There are still challenges, still adjustments, still questions and still some who wonder if the "new lake" will be their cup of tea. All merited. Time will tell. I'm rooting for us all.

I didn't get many pictures last night. TOO BUSY LOL. The Winery was ROCKIN'. The staff and manager worked HARD and kept smiling. KUDOS guys. SO polite and so good to us. There was a beautiful wedding in progress on the grounds. I saw LOTS of friendly faces from my past and not so distant past. Anniversaries, birthdays, and, in general, a celebratory atmosphere. As always, I am grateful for ANYONE who takes the time in this busy world to come see us play. We REALLY appreciate it.

With a splendid sunset and boats EVERYWHERE, I can't tell you how many times in discussions throughout the night that the comment was made "it's so great to have the water back in the lake". YEP, Buckeye Lake is B A C K. It's different, and it will continue to transform into something I'm sure will be beyond anything we could have imaged as natives. At the end of the day, I'm so glad you natives are still here, and I'm happy to meet the new ones. You're gonna like being "Lake People".

Next week we road trip to Hollywood Casino Dayton on Saturday May 25th. Sunday night will be back on the OTHER side of the lake at the Buckeye Lake Pizza Cottage in the Heart of the Village of Buckeye Lake for music on the patio. May 26th. Each corner of the lake having it's own dynamic. I love it all.

I'm posting just a few of the pics from last night. My musical partner in crime, Mike Nelson making crazy poses. Thanks Mike for making sure "the beat goes on". We will see you on the next gig.

I had one of the best days imaginable with the beloved and artistic crew from Explore Licking County. They provided a mini oasis upon which I was able to paint my spin on the Ohio Statehouse. Their booth was THE most inviting display in attendance, tho every county was awesome and unique in their own exhibit. It was like having a great day on the front porch. Thanx guys. To say I was honored doesn't even cover it. Your faith in me is a blessing and gives me great courage. I’m the lucky one for being in your orbit. Thanks Dan, Carol and Garrett. You are really cool dudes.

I know I would be amazed at the timeline of events and the shifts of the music industry over the years. Now and then I'll see a picture that reminds me of my footprints in my gig life. The different fashion looks, the crowds, the bars and the venues. So colorful. So memorable.

So another observation of being a musician over the years is "venue" people. By that I mean managers, staff, workers, servers etc. There are times that it is just a flatline experience. You walk into a cold room, find the human in charge, figure out the logistics and commence in set up. Sometimes these people are unfriendly, look at you like you're a misplaced alien and removed. Sometimes they barely look up. It's not like you need a ticker tape parade to get started. It'd just be nice to know you'reon the same team when you come in the room. However, sometimes, these people blow you away.

Last Sunday I had the pleasure of playing a solo piano gig at the Athletic Club of Columbus. Tammy from Class Acts of Columbus graciously booked the gig. I appreciate all the talent agents at Class Acts Of Columbus beyond all imagination. This gig was extra nice for me because there is no PA involved. I carry nothing heavier than my purse into the club. They have a grand piano. YAY. There is no electric keyboard in the world that can please me the way a REAL grand piano does. Cadillac gig.

When I entered the room my eyes were met with a breathtaking display of food, flowers and in general Mother's day themed decor that was tremendously on point. Pure class. I was greeted by the hostess who handed me a cup of coffee WITH CREAM (my personal favorite) a bottled water, and a super friendly face. I really have to shout this out. Not everyone, in every venue will greet you this way. I need to mention this because I was blown away by gratitude. Small things, but enormous in my book.

So for several sets, I played this marvelous instrument. So many pleasant exchanges with the guests/staff and knowing the blessing I have received by my parents (who are long gone) providing and guiding me towards being a musician. Not every gig is like this, but I surely do recognize it when it comes along.

And, finally, a message of love to my beloved mom. Virginia Smith you were a soldier in real life and a soldier IN life. Your strength, determination, guidance, intelligence and long suffering shrouded my brother and I in the gift of motherhood. There were many battles, there were many sweet moments. Getting a late start for having kids, I don't know how you did it. Most importantly, your love for us sculpted us into who we are. Your son always leaves the world a better place wherever he is involved and I play songs and paint pictures. I think that would make you and dad so happy. I miss you every day of my life. If there was a hotline to heaven, I'd surely be "blowing your phone up" every day. My deepest hope is that I can again look into the face of you and dad because nothing else matters that much.

Back to the venue of this past mother's day, thank you ACC. You are above and beyond.

May 12, 2019 Mother's Day gig was amongst the finest I've played in a long time.

It is immersed in legend, rich history and an eclectic mix of out-of-the-box natives. In the 40's it was a booming spot with an amusement park acting as it's anchor and heartbeat. Big Bands, restaurants, entertainment of all sorts, swimming pools, ball rooms, river boats, rumors of mob bosses passing through and all the things that went so well with waterside fun. An era so precious.

Over the years, the music faded, the amusement park caved in and the glamorous and legendary visitors faded away. Cottages became mansions, boating and lakeside bars became the primary reason for coming here and Buckeye Lake transitioned into a seasonal hang out for water enthusiasts from all over.

Just recently, there was a four point one mile dam renovation on Buckeye Lake. The Army Corp of Engineers deemed it unsafe. The lake was stopped in it's tracks for several years, the water level way down, boating was really lame and the residents found themselves smack dab in the middle of a construction zone that sometimes generated the noice of industrial war zone. For three plus years, the reimagining of the dam took place. In November of 2018, the construction fence went down, the monster machinery went away, the governor of Ohio conducted a Buckeye Lake Dam dedication ceremony and we found ourselves with a brand new bike/walking path that stretches lakefront for miles.

Buckeye Lake Winterfest, a brainchild of the Buckeye Lake Chamber of Commerce was born 5 years ago. Like many small village festivals, it was hatched, stood up on it's wobbly legs, and over the past 5 years began to gain muscle and stamina. This year does mark the 5th annual Buckeye Lake Winterfest. It consists of a solid weekend of participating bars, restaurants, businesses, music, art, food, beverage and partying.

As for art, it has offered a new road for this little piece of the world. I was not involved in the first Winterfest. I read about it, but basically didn't get it. It just went right past me. Four years ago, a member of the Yacht club messaged me and said she thought I should participate in the art show portion which was going to be held at the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club. I was mildly creating pieces of art at that time and posted my creations on Facebook. I thanked Lisa, the Yacht Club member, for asking but told her I felt that my stuff really wouldn't sell around here. She firmly disagreed, and encouraged me to participate.

SO, I started out by pulling things off my wall that I had painted from the past, making new things and scurrying to create my first Winterfest "art booth". It was fun. I did fairly well that day and was a new fan of Winterfest. In the subsequent years, I began making it a part of my life. I created material just for the festival which included a lot of nautical themed work. I consulted a friend about getting prints made. I taught myself how to paint with replication in mind, market with social medial, build a booth, and fine tune a presentation.

Here we are at year 5 of the Buckeye Lake Winterfest. 4th year for me. This year I have created my most professional booth. I invested in display panels, professional matting kits, many prints, marketing pieces and more bells and whistles than I have ever generated in my life. The response from the things I've posted on social medial has been great. We are 3 days away from the festival and the excitement for this event is mounting.

It all means a LOT to art in this area. Over my past four years of involvement, I have watched the growth. I observed that there was very little live music up until this year. I have noticed that there is live music galore for the 2019 festival. I have noticed professionally generated maps of businesses, bars, restaurants, entertainment and sponsors. All activities have been published and there is so much to choose from that it will be hard to MAKE a choice. Local business participants are striving to make sure their exclusive entertainment plans for all festival goers rise to the top. The first, to my knowledge, official Buckeye Lake Art Gallery will be opening the very day of Winterfest. January 26, 2019.

In summary and brevity, Buckeye Lake Winterfest has evolved into meaning a LOT for art. A seed planted, an idea spawned, an endeavor coming to fruition. Members of the Buckeye Lake Chamber of Commerce and Buckeye Lake Yacht Club have flexed their marketing muscles beautifully this year. I can only imagine what the future holds for us here in the realm of music and art. There are growing pains, the competition will gain speed and the bar will be raised. I am happy to be a part of it with my Smith Girl Arts booth.

It's been awhile.

I just finished the most unusual contract at sea that I've ever done. On Aug. 19, 2013 I boarded the Disney Wonder porting out of Vancouver B.C.
In the coming three weeks we cruised to Alaska. We ported in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan as well as creeping down Tracy Arm to see the South Sawyer Glacier.
I never anticipated the beauty I would see nor did I know that we would be cruising so close to the shore line while in that area. It was drop dead gorgeous.
In the evenings when I was getting ready for work, around 6ish, I would see whale tales rolling in the water and spewing water flying through the air. So gracful. So majestic. Each port in Alaska had it's own charming character. Skagway reminded me of the show "Northern Exposure". VERY quirky and seemed like a place right out of the wild, wild west. Juneau was always dark, cloudy and rainy when we were there. Shops were nice and seemed like a lot of good restaurants. Ketchikan was very quaint. I had friends there from back in Ohio. They took me on adventures every Saturday when we pulled into port. All in all, Alaska is someplace that everybody should try to travel to. You will never forget it if you go.

From there, we began relocating. San Francisco was next. Five day relocation cruise. San Fran was the only port. We had a 2 AM all aboard. Nice. My friend Betsy picked me up and we sat in a wonderful restaurant while watching the America's Cup front and center. She then took me all the way to Antioch, CA to see her home and family. Great day. Jammed with her son, Ethan, who played upright bass. I played piano. They had lots of great wine and it was so nice hang with them.

We then sailed to Los Angeles to pick up the passengers for our 14 day Panama Canal crossing. I had never played a 14 days cruise and was most apprehensive about doing one. As it turned out, the passengers for that cruise were great. Two of them invited me to eat in Palo, the Wonder's 5 star restaurant while actually cruising through the canal. Most memorable experience.

We finally relocated to our new home port Galveston. I played two weeks from that port and was then transferred to Miami, FL in order to board the newly re-imagined Disney Magic. I flew to Miami on Oct. 12th. I had a luxurious 5 days in the Crowne Plaza. I suddenly received a call that the Magic was running late due to running into some inclement weather on the way back from Spain. We were then transported to Port Canaveral to board the Magic while they were applying the finishing touches.

On Oct 23nd we finally sailed back to our intended new home port in Miami. We then hosted a two day media cruise in order to promote and publicize the newly renovated ship. All Disney dignitaries were there. Quite sometthing. It was astounding to watch the process of a company such as that orchestrating historic dry dock and carrying the completion over the finish line.

Just prior to signing off, my boss invited myself and my fellow musicians to experience a dolphine encounter. I accepted the invitation. It was precious. What intelligent, gentle and loving creatures. Yet again, a new and mind blowing experience.

On Nov. 15th, I signed off and flew home to Ohio. Tiny breather. I am scheduled to do two recording sessions of new originals while home with a couple of VERY pro musicians from the area. Should be great.

I board the Disney Fantasy on Dec. 7 for another contract that will end on Mar 1st.

That is all for now.
Gayla Smithtag:www.gaylasmith.com,2005:Post/52672008-09-12T08:23:21-04:002008-09-12T08:23:21-04:00OKTOBERFEST 2008 AND FALL Hi. Been awhile since I blogged. Some good things about fall: leaves, cooler nights, sweatshirts and exotic coffee drinks. Speaking of which, Dan Clark, Chris Baker and yours truly had the pleasure of being invited to the Oktoberfest 08. We played Friday night in the middle of the sky breaking loose with much rain. Thankfully, our tent filled up to the brim and we and gang of very wet Oktoberfest attendants rocked the night away.
Very special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Owens, Linda Casale, Jack and James for believing in us and standing at our sides during the performance. I appreciate your faith and promotion more than you know.

The fall gigs begin in tents, hay fields, amongst pumpkins, apples, the sound of locusts, and foggy nights and mornings. I hope to see you out and being happy as we move toward the coming change in seasons.
The sun and warmth brought people out of their cacoons and take on human form.
We had a great time on the gig. Bruce and Greg stopped by to sit in, Randy was in rare form, and I was just happy to see other humanoids out and celebrating the hope of summer.

Everybody's fighting colds, and seasonal crappage. It was a miracle to be able to sing last night, but that crowd just pumped my adrenaline from the first note. Dan and Chris played like the seasoned groovable champs they always do and well, I just flat out had a great time. Met new fans, took new pix, and the place jammed all night. Thank you to everybody who cheered me and the boyz like you did. It made Ohio weather in Jan forgettable for an evening. Luv yaz and God Bless. c ya on feb 21st.Gayla Smithtag:www.gaylasmith.com,2005:Post/52572008-01-07T05:05:57-05:002008-01-07T05:05:57-05:00January BluesAnyone that knows me very well, knows I'm no fan of winter. After the first cold and gray week into the new year, I was already losin' my mind from the Blues. I really thank God for my gig with Randy at the Copper Penny on SUndays. It helps me get happy again and the crowds bring me so much joy. I truly thank everybody for coming out week after week. You are all Blues Busters to me!!!!! Take a look at the pix from Jan 6th 08 on

Sadly, the Cowtown Music site has ceased. This was a great link for all musicians as it gave our websites and gigs great promotion. A big thanks to John Six for the 8 years he spent on it. I hope somebody picks it up, but until then the site will be sorely missed. In the meantime, if you have friends you can forward my website to that you'd like to share with, PLEASE DO IT. Word of mouth, (or net) is so helpful in the absense of Cowtown.

Lotsa new pix. Ralph Susi, Greg Stonerock and Steve Graves sat in with Randy and I . Thanx you guys. You always make it fun. I got to dance the last set. Whew, that guy took me to school on the dance floor. It felt like 100 degrees, but it was hot fun. New owners say as long as the crowds keep comin' we'll be there, so c'mon out. Never a dull moment.
This week I will have pix of the ball hats and BBQ aprons I had embroidered with my original art work on it. I'll keep ya posted.
